Description
The Biomass Energy Research and Innovation Network for the Semi-Arid Region (REPIENSA) was created in 2017 by bringing together several regional stakeholders involved in research and development of solutions for the use of biomass from dry areas. Its main objective is to train human resources by interacting with the production sector and innovation companies to conduct research to assist in the development and innovation of sustainable use of biomass adapted to semi-arid conditions for the production of bioenergy, biofuels, and high-value-added bioproducts. REPIENSA's activities have focused on the use of the main sources of biomass available and with potential in the context of the semi-arid region, namely: (1) forage palm, (2) sisal, (3) plant prunings, (4) firewood, (5) animal manure, and (6) urban organic solid waste.
The main processes for studying different biomasses are included in the thermochemical and biochemical platforms. The thermochemical platform highlights studies on the production and use of biochar in pollutant removal processes and in improving biotechnological processes. In the biochemical platform, the Network's activities are focused on the production processes of ethanol, biogas and hydrogen. Also noteworthy are studies on the production of high added value compounds such as Xylitol and 1,3 Propanediol. More recently, studies on technical, economic and environmental analyses have been included in the Network's activities.
These results were only possible thanks to a network of researchers brought together within the scope of REPIENSA. Research groups from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), University of Pernambuco (UPE), Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), São Paulo State University (UNESP), Rio Grande do Sul State University (UERGS), as well as research institutes such as the Center for Strategic Technologies of the Northeast (CETENE) and the National Institute of the Semi-Arid Region (INSA); and non-governmental organizations such as Diaconia.
With the quality of REPIENSA's actors, it was possible to raise significant resources in the last 4 years, resources to cover the costs of activities and to implement scholarships for scientific initiation, master's and doctoral degrees. The main approved projects and their respective amounts are listed below. Nine projects were approved by different state and national funding agencies, totaling R$2,527,100.00. A highlight is the CNPq R&D&I notices, where the project Chemical and Energy Valorization of the Organic Fraction of Urban Solid Waste: Biotechnological Routes for Obtaining Biofuels, Chemical Products, Fertilizers and Energy (VALORA-FORSU) - Biotec Call No. 31/2022 - R$880,000.00 was approved.
These indicators demonstrate the success of the activities carried out by REPIENSA, which clearly highlights the need for work in multidisciplinary networks to enhance results and ensure an improvement in the quality of life of people living in the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil.
Currently, the subnetwork has 40 researchers, including:
